Thanks, that was a very nice review, despite having seen at least some R. Crumb sketchbook in the past, many of those sketches being familiar. Looked for other sketchbook review, but only one of the controversial stuff was found (will watch that soon), but looking forward to see the rest of this series.10:10 Multi level driving infrastructure was already a thing in 1930's car centric futurism, so that's already quite retro by the 1960's. Though some of the elements were probably still in plans by some futuristic designers, multi level urban highways were already in practice superseded by bulldozing large portions of cities, especially poorer neighborhoods, to make space for the on-ground highways and their huge intersections. Crumb has also always stated that he doesn't like 'the new' or 'modern' so much, be it music, car designs, you name it, all in all he appears to be quite a retro spirited, even nostalgic guy. Also look at his cartooning style, it had a good deal of influences from cartoons of the preceding decades, like Krazy Kat comes to mind and Harvey Kurtzman, mentioned in the video.

I read Marvel during the Miller period, the Golden age of Marvel. I read and re-read the Wolverine mini-series until memorized. In my opinion this was a top 5, EVER, book. Masterful work (including graphics)

Love the way Jim looks totally disinterested and tired at the start, but as soon as the video starts to roll, he switches into his sales spiel and springs to life. A true pro.

When I was a teenager we had a copy of 'The Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics' by Bill Blackbeard. Where I was first introduced to Nemo, Krazy Kat and Ignatz and many others. Check out 'Merry England, Etc.' Ronald Searle's haunting satire. Thanks for the memories.

I know x-men 1 is the record holder mainly due to how many were pre-ordered by shops etc. But if it was one book vs one book x-men 1 vs x-force 1 which actually sold more. Which one is worth more?

I went into a comic shop today… and everything looks the same… there are a few stand out creators, however yes, Jim is right…. There aren’t enough deep creators, who have a real authentic perspective on this medium… I love revisiting Eastman and Liard, Liefeld, McFarlane, Larsen, Lee, Silvestri, Simonson, Adam’s, Golden, Mignola…and all the greats in the 80s that made comics so exciting. There is nothing original out there anymore…. Go wild… be original, be you…. That’s why I hold back because there are traditionalists who frown upon it. But Frank Miller said it in the 90s… “Just make comics!” That’s it….😊😊😊😊😊

This channel is so exciting. I studied under Walt, Klaus, Carmine Infantino, Joe Orlando, Sal Amendola and Will Eisner… and after after years ago since I’ve been in the professional world, I’ve never seen a channel or show like this… My heart is broken that Ed is gone. He wasn’t a monster… he was a flawed human, like the rest of us. So many have lost out since this is all in the past now…

Yeah in some ways you kind of get bogged down by what you know, there is something so raw about these pages of all these people just going for it. Like I was drawing some pages back when I was single digit ages but I kind of stopped when I started to get better on a technical level, by 15 I was decent for my age at anatomy and basic proportions (maybe good enough for early 60s Marvel as a comparison) but exclusively drawing figures kind of neutered my ability to draw anything else especially pages of story telling because me being perfectionist there would be a strong contrast between my figure drawing and literally everything else, which put a block in mind for a while. Now in my early 20s I’m kind of getting out of my rut, and one of my tools I used with my obsessive perfectionist brain was basically just straight up copying other comics page for page. I started with that Strange Tales Kirby issue where Torch fights Captain America, and did a Ditko issue, a Buscema, etc, and found after doing so when I went to do my own compositions and my own pages that some part of those artists had imprinted on to me, and really gave me a feel and the confidence to do more work independent of reference. I guess it’s kind of like a school kind of approach like in Math class where the teacher shows you how to do a type of problem and you copy that verbatim and that kind of allows you to figure out the homework questions, by taking what the teacher showed you and applying that to a different problem.
